As soon as I told my friends and family I was planning a trip to Cancun, I got the same concerned reactions – “Is Cancun safe these days?” “Isn’t it super dangerous down there?” Well, after spending 10 days exploring this vibrant Mexican Caribbean city, I’m here to share my honest, firsthand perspective on Cancun’s safety.

The Short Version: Cancun is Generally Safe for Tourists

To cut right to the chase – Cancun is generally a safe destination for tourists who use common sense precautions. Of course, like any major tourist hub, there are some areas and activities where you’ll want to exercise a bit more caution. But overall, I felt very secure during my time in Cancun.

My Personal Experience Visiting Cancun

During my stay, I did everything from strolling the Hotel Zone at night, taking Uber rides, and exploring downtown Cancun, to visiting Mayan ruins, snorkeling in cenotes, and partying at all-inclusive resorts. If safety is your top concern, you’ll definitely want to focus your time in Cancun’s Hotel Zone and the adjacent areas. This is the main tourist hub, filled with resorts, restaurants, shops, and entertainment. It’s incredibly well-patrolled by security and police, making it the most secure part of the city for visitors.

Additionally, the downtown Cancun area, known as El Centro, is also quite safe, especially during the daytime when it’s bustling with locals and tourists alike. I really enjoyed wandering the lively markets, grabbing tacos from street vendors, and people-watching in the central plaza.

Areas to Exercise More Caution

While Cancun’s main tourist areas are very safe, there are a couple neighborhoods I’d recommend avoiding unless you have a local guide:

• Irregular Settlements – These are the informal, unplanned housing communities on the outskirts of Cancun. They tend to have higher crime rates and are not safe for tourists to wander alone.
• Puerto Juárez – This port area, while convenient for catching ferries to the nearby islands, has a reputation for higher crime and should be approached with extra caution, especially at night.

My Top Cancun Safety Tips

Based on my experiences, here are the key pieces of advice I have for staying safe in Cancun:

1. Stick to the Hotel Zone and downtown areas – These are the safest, most tourist-friendly parts of the city.
2. Use Uber or licensed taxis – Avoid hailing random cabs off the street.
3. Keep valuables hidden and out of sight – Don’t flash expensive jewelry, phones, or cameras.

Is the Food and Water Safe in Cancun?

One of the biggest concerns I hear about visiting Mexico is the safety of the food and water. In my experience, Cancun is generally quite safe in this regard, especially in the main tourist areas.

I ate at all kinds of places – from high-end resort restaurants to humble street food stalls – and never had any issues. The key is to use common sense. Stick to places that look clean and busy, avoid uncooked produce, and drink bottled water. As long as you take these basic precautions, you’re very unlikely to get sick.

Solo Female Travel Safety in Cancun – Is Cancun Safe to Visit for women?

As a solo female traveler, I felt very comfortable and secure exploring Cancun on my own. The tourist areas are well-populated, well-lit, and have a strong police presence, so I never felt unsafe, even when walking around at night.

That said, I still took the usual solo traveler precautions – I avoided isolated areas, kept my valuables secure, and trusted my instincts. I also made sure to let friends or family know my daily plans. With those simple measures, I had an amazing, incident-free time in Cancun.

LGBTQ+ Travel Safety in Cancun

Cancun is generally considered a very LGBTQ+-friendly destination. The Hotel Zone in particular has a vibrant LGBTQ+ scene, with gay-friendly clubs, bars, and events. Public displays of affection between same-sex couples are widely accepted, especially in the tourist areas.

Of course, as with anywhere, it’s important to be aware of your surroundings and use common sense. But overall, Cancun provides a welcoming, safe environment for LGBTQ+ travelers.
